History of Our Organization
If you lived in the Grant or Roberts County area a few years ago and had a family member with a disability who needed supports after graduating from high school, that family member had to move away to receive the needed supports. Supports were only available in the cities where the support providers were located.
Grant/Roberts Area Disability Support Services evolved from a group of parents in the area who got together (and who might have been just a bit on the rebellious side) and asked the question “Why are our children forced to move away from family and friends to get the supports they need?”
And so began the quest for changing the system. After months of meetings to determine what path to take to accomplish their goal of bringing the services to the hometowns of the people who need them, the group sent out an RFP. The providers who responded were interviewed and a provider was chosen. The agency provider hired a local person.
The first services were simply recreational. The people who were provided these services were still living in their parental homes. A couple of years later, with more people asking for services, an office was set up in Milbank, more staff was hired and more services were brought into the local communities.
With additional supports available, some of the people were now able to move into their own apartments. The additional staff was able to assist with teaching daily living skills and do job development. Several of the people provided services were now able to get jobs in their home community.
Today, in addition to the services provided by Lifequest, people can get services from PLANS providers in the area and Family Support 360.
